Turmeric otherwise known as oyster, saffron or yellow originated in southern Asia. Now grown mainly in East India, China, Japan, Java and Central America. It has the form of a rhizome of an underground root similar to ginger. It is added to sweet foods giving them a characteristic tart taste, and is also used to color rice, pasta and canned vegetables. Turmeric is used to season poultry dishes, light hot sauces, fried eggs, omelets, crabs, and salads. Harmonizes with almost all spices of oriental cuisine.
